U.S. Senate Expected to Take Up Federal DREAM Act Today
Wednesday, October 24, 2007 : The U.S. Senate is expected to vote today on considering legislation that would provide federal financial aid to undocumented students, after a similar state bill was vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger earlier this month.
The federal Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, which would grant eligible undocumented students access to federal financial aid, is slated to be brought to a cloture vote today, Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., one of the act’s sponsors, told reporters yesterday.
For the act to be debated by the Senate, the discussion must first be approved by 60 senators as part of the cloture vote.
Since Durbin introduced the federal version of the legislation to the Senate in 2001, the act has achieved bipartisan support in Congress but has never made it to the president’s desk. The same version was included in the comprehensive immigration reform bill set aside by the U.S. Congress in June.
