Mission of the October 18-20 New Orleans Convention
"We will use the Convention as a demonstration project in labor media
centers, providing tools and training for delegates to report and
distribute the stories of crisis, struggle and progress. We will create
articles, blogs, broadcasts and video stories that capture the issues
behind the Hurricane Katrina tragedy and explain their meaning for
everybody. Together , we will demonstrate the power of labor's voice."

Two years later, 'There's no one here'
10/20/2007 - 7:10pm
The area immediately east of New Orleans was laid waste more than two
years ago, yet still looks like a war zone. Only a third of the 67,000
people who once lived in Saint Bernard Parish have returned, to a
community without hospitals, libraries or a functioning sewage system.
Amid all this devastation, there is just one organization helping
homeowners rebuild--and it just started on its 100th rehab.

In a city of despair, hope remains…
10/20/2007 - 11:44pm
“Inspirational” is an overworked adjective in our collective vocabulary,
but it can surely be used to describe much of what’s happening in New
Orleans today.

THIS IS NEW ORLEANS, TWO YEARS AND TWO MONTHS AFTER KATRINA
10/20/2007 - 5:59pm
An overview of what New Orleans is, two years, two months after Katrina,
why it's so bad--and how labor, alone of everyone, is doing something to
help the recovery, despite obstacles.

The catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina has spawned "a modern form of
slavery" in New Orleans – one being challenged by a fledging worker
rights organization.

hand. When Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit New Orleans in 2005, unions
members sent supplies and volunteered to help clean up and provide
whatever help was needed.
