Dozens of flag-waving military supporters squared off boisterously with peace activists today in the first major showdown over of a U.S. Marine Corps recruiting station that until recently had been operating below the radar in downtown Berkeley.

What purpose is served by color coding our protest?
Isn't there a better strategy than parody to deal with the ignorant misinformed warmongers who are still apparently stuck in a cold war pinko anti-commie mentality?
Isn't pink a throwback to a cutsie barbie 1959 cultural wasteland?
What purpose is served by the pink costumes?
Beyond the history, the struggle is certainly between labor and capital, between socialism and capitalism. Nothing has changed. Labor's international flag is the red flag, and we need to see far more red flags at our peace demonstrations.
Aside from all the politics, I far prefer pink than the uniform black that is common now, especially among poor young people. They are clearly on a death march, reminding us of the terrible 19th century and before when people always wore black and made it part of their religion to never wear colors. For those of us who simply look better in the blue-green-brown end of the color spectrum, we can still wear lots of colors instead of solid black, a very depressing color as black is technically the absence of color.
And please, if you have the time, picket these recruiting stations. This particular demonstration did succeed in shutting down the recruiting station for the day. May they all be permanently shut down as the only reason the military exists is to maximize the profits of the capitalist class.
