Border Mayors in Texas Oppose Border Wall

by NAM (reposted)
Originally From New America Media

Thursday, October 11, 2007 : BROWNSVILLE, Texas—Mayor Pat Ahumada affirms that border cities like his will fight the construction of a border wall, reports Rumbo newspaper. His statements openly defy the federal government’s recently announced plan for a border wall that will cover 70 miles of the Rio Grande Valley.
Ahumada and other border city mayors in Texas and authorities in Mexico claim the wall has negative environmental, economic and cultural impacts. The federal government, according to Ahumada, has rejected alternatives presented by local authorities and has not organized forums to hear feedback from border residents. He has suggested building a dam to raise the water level of the Rio Grande and allow for boat patrols. The city of Brownsville is considering a lawsuit against the federal government to prevent construction of the wall.
