Walden: Earth Day 2008 Project
"Walden: The Ballad of Thoreau" is an educational performance play about the final two days Henry David Thoreau spent in his cabin before leaving Walden Pond. On EARTH DAY 2007 over 4,000 colleges, schools, home schools and community theaters in nine nations performed the play in celebration of Thoreau, his writings about nature, and our earth.

Walden: The Ballad of Thoreau
Educator’s Information
An educational performance play about the final two days Henry David Thoreau spent in his cabin before leaving Walden Pond.
This two act, one set, four character play is designed for use by high schools colleges, home schoolers and community theaters. The play script, posters, director and actor notes, plus customized lesson plans are all available via our website FREE OF CHARGE for performances around Earth Day 2008.
Thoreau is America's original "tree hugger" and forefather of our environmental movement. He was a gentle naturalist, earth lover, author, pencil maker ... and is the most quoted American writer in history. Yet, when he passed, he was better known for helping market the pencil than for a single word he wrote with it.
“In an age of global warming, bio-fuels, hybrid cars and oil wars,” says play author Michael Johnathon from his farmhouse home in Kentucky, “the play can introduce students to Thoreau as well as environmental concerns in their own home towns at a time when, frankly, they need it.”
To access the Walden play materials email producer [at] waldenplay.com or FAX us on school stationary 859-225-4020. Please include your name, grade, school name, school address and phone number in your request.
Also available is the new eleven song, all-acoustic album, Walden: The Earth Song Collection. The CD is suitable for classroom play and discussion and comes with a complete lesson plan. Song samples are on the website listed below.
Who is supporting this project? Aside from the author, the Earth Day Network, American Forests, Dixon-Ticonderoga, and Mother Earth News Magazine. By working together, the play is made available free of charge to schools. Also, see the March 2007 issue of NEA-Today Magazine for details.
