It has been more than a month since the John Myslin died after being hit by a truck while riding his bike on Mission Street. For cyclists in Santa Cruz, his death is a wake up call. We cannot sit by and allow more people to be hurt on an incomplete Mission Street that does not have an appropriate place for cyclists.
On Tuesday, September 25th, please come to the City Council Meeting at 8:00 PM at 809 Center Street, Santa Cruz. (The meeting starts at 7:00 PM, and we expect our agenda item to be heard starting at 8:00 PM.) We are asking the City Council to make changes to King and Mission Street to Make them safer for cyclists.
Specifically we are asking that the City Council:
1. Employ traffic-calming measures on Mission to reduce automobile speeds, and place signs reminding drivers that "cyclists are allowed full use of right lane."
2. Make King Street a BIke Boulevard by diverting automobile through traffic or by adding bike lanes.
A task force made up of cyclists and neighbors should immediately get to work on the details of this project with a strong mandate from the City Council.
If you can't make the City Council Meeting, the City's Transportation Commission will look at the same issue on Wednesday, September 26th (7:00 PM, 809 Center St., Santa Cruz).
An email to the Council and the Traffic Commission would also be useful.
