New York Grants Licenses to Undocumented

Saturday, September 22, 2007 : NEW YORK – New York Governor Eliot Spitzer signed authorization Friday to allow the nearly one million undocumented immigrants living in New York state to obtain drivers' licenses without being required to provide their legal status or social security number, reports Univision.com and New York's El Diario/La Prensa.
Beginning in 2008, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will accept foreign passports and birth certificates as proof of identification. Spokesperson Maritere Arce told El Diario/La Prensa, the governor “does not agree with the way the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is being used to implement immigration laws.” “Not giving licenses to a population that lives in our state prevents them from participating in civil life,” she added. The licenses will allow these immigrants to access basic services such as opening a bank account.
