New Jersey Town Repeals Anti-Immigrant Law
Originally From New America Media
Wednesday, September 19, 2007 : MIAMI – Thousands breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday when a small New Jersey town repealed a law designed to crack down on illegal immigration, reports Univision.com. The Riverside city council voted 3-1 to repeal a law that would have banned employers from hiring immigrants and landlords from renting to them.
The ordinance was approved by the council last July, after a similar ordinance was adopted by the Pennsylvania town of Hazleton.?The law was canceled,?the council announced, because it would be too costly to implement. Town authorities said they were unable to pay the legal expenses necessary to defend the ordinance in court. Several immigrant rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, had sued the Riverside town council, arguing that the ordinance violated constitutional rights.
