by Dan Bacher
Arturo Rodriguez, president of the United Farmworkers Union, is requesting that people come to the State Capitol this week and support SB180, the Fair Treatment for Farm Workers Act." Approximately 40 farm workers and supporters are holding a daily 24-hour vigil at the capitol, on the North Steps, to pressure Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign the bill. Please drop by and support the workers in their battle for justice in the fields! Here is Rodriguez' action alert and letter to UFW supporters. For more information, go to: http://www.ufw.org

Wednesday was an exciting day. More than 800 farm workers from all over California traveled to Sacramento to tell the Governor and their elected officials to support SB180, the "Fair Treatment for Farm Workers Act" (D-Migden). The bill is currently sitting on the governor’s desk.

Workers were excited when Governor Schwarzenegger came out and addressed them. The Governor agreed that it’s wrong that the laws in the books are not the law in the fields, but made no public comment on SB 180.

Farm workers have been energized to continue fighting. Dozens of farm workers from all over California will continue going to Sacramento on a daily basis. Besides this, approximately 40 farm workers and supporters are in Sacramento full time holding a daily 24-hour vigil at the capitol, on the North Steps.

Won't you come out and join these workers?

WHO: Farm Workers and Community Supporters

WHAT: 24-Hour Vigil

WHEN: Monday September 10 thru Wednesday September 12.
CHECK UFW.ORG DAILY FOR UPDATES

WHERE: Capitol Building, North Steps
(L Street between 10th and 11th St.)

WHY: Lobbying the Governor and legislators in support of this critical bill. Help farm workers keep a constant presence so decision makers remember the farm workers and what they endure

Since Wednesday's rally, some growers have begun retaliating against the brave workers who attended Wednesday’s event, docking them work hours or giving them written warnings. However, these workers are not intimidated. Some of the same workers will be traveling to Sacramento again next week to continue fighting for the bill.

Si Se Puede!
