Oak Grove after Fences and Footbal

The tree sit at the Oak Grove continues on.

Last Wednesday the UC police put up an eight-foot fence around the part of Memorial Oak Grove. The tree sits had been going for 9 months and continued on. After a rally where food and water was hauled up past the fence they were ready for many more days. On Friday (Aug. 31) police responded to rumors of fence removal by coming out in force. They pushed people away from the fence and set up police barrcads ten feet in front of the fence. So, we had half of the UC Berkeley police force and barricades - all to defend a chain link fence.

The next day was Saturday and the first and a major football game. There were no problems with football fans and Oak Grove supporters. Many fliers were handed out and many fans talked to. Some were hostile and many were friendly.

The tree sit goes on. A new tree sit sits above the fence and another new one is now outside the fence and connected to all the rest.

The court date to decide the future of the grove is September 19. Please be prepared to support the Grove and come by any day.

Bears (The Berkeley symbol) support the Grove. Grizzly Bears are the symbol of the State of California and the mascot of the UC Berkeley. They are extinct in California. Will native oak trees be next?
