Ya Basta! Resistance to injustice comes to D.C. this September

As General Petraeus delivers his report on Iraq, and Congress continues to fund war
and occupation, groups and individuals descend on D.C. to say no more!

March for Peace

The student-led March for Peace will arrive in D.C. on September 10 after 110 days
of walking; having grown from two to eight dedicated folks as it has passed through
11 states! The march will culminate at the White House with a rally and campout;
check out the march for peace D.C. web page (http://www.marchforpeace.info/D.C.html)
for details. [Meet at 10am at the Arlington Metro Station to assemble for March. 1pm
rally at the White House. Campout in Lafayette Park at Dark.] All are invited and
welcome to accompany the marchers on the last leg of the journey. We urge anyone who
can make it to meet the march for the final walk to the White House. This action has
great potential to make a strong statement against the war.

Make a donation (http://www.marchforpeace.info/Donate.html) to the March to help
cover outstanding expenses and support the marchers as they participate in further
actions in D.C. the week of September 10. Read and share the Marchers' Open Letter
to the President (http://www.notinourname.net/images/stories/mini/m4peace.pdf).

On the ground march coordinator and Not in Our Name Organizer Peter Cobb sends this
report from West Virginia:

The March for Peace has now visited 11 states. It began in San Francisco on May 21,
and now, over three months later, has climbed mountain ranges, crossed deserts,
walked across the Midwest and is now in the Appalachians. The marchers hike twelve
hours a day, often through extreme heat and humidity, rain and hail storms. They
endure blisters, foot, ankle and leg pain, sunburns and are sometimes near
dehydration. Sometimes, we are fortunate to stay in the homes of supporters, other
nights we camp in cemeteries, horse stables, or by the side of the road. The March
is now within a week of reaching Washington, D.C. on September 10th. In anticipation
of the White House being the last stop on our route, we have published an Open
Letter to the President
(http://www.notinourname.net/images/stories/mini/m4peace.pdf), asking that he extend
the same kindness that so many along the march route have, by offering us a place to
sleep for the night. As has been the custom this summer, even a place to camp on the
lawn would suffice!

Along the way, hundreds have marched along with us. They have ranged in age from the
3 year old who joined us with his father for two days in Eastern Iowa to many who
are well into retirement. Thousands more have supported us in other ways, bringing
water, food, sunscreen, umbrellas and other supplies to the side of the road, giving
rides to campsites, attending rallies, and sometimes just offering words of support,
a handshake or a hug.

The March has traveled through the parts of the country that are often portrayed as
the most sympathetic to the war and occupation of Iraq. We have been able to
interact with veterans, school teachers, farmers, students and many others. The
folks we have talked to have a wide range of perspectives; many supported the
invasion back in 2003, very few still do.

Not in Our Name decided to support the March for Peace because we recognized a
courageous act of resistance. The marchers have brought their vision of a better
world directly to the people, and they are listening. It is clear that we are ready
for a change; and it is a change that can only be brought about by us, not the
politicians who continue to vote for more funding for war, occupation and death. One
lesson of the March for Peace is that a small group of dedicated folks can and do
have an impact on thousands of others. All of us need to take inspiration from the
marchers and do more, each and every day, to change the world.

Please join us as we march on the White House on September 10th. Details of the
March Route can be found at the D.C. page (http://www.marchforpeace.info/D.C.html)
of the March for Peace website (http://www.marchforpeace.info/).

Resistance in D.C.

September is a crucial month for all of us who oppose the war and occupations in
Iraq and Afghanistan, and who demand that Bush and Cheney be held accountable for
the long list of crimes and injustices they have perpetrated. The White House will
be releasing the "progress report" on the "surge" in Iraq, and Congress will be
voting on additional funding for the bipartisan "War Without End". We urge everyone
who can to come to DC and say Not in Our Name!

Following is a partial list of actions going on in D.C. in the coming weeks. Check
