Who Disbanded Iraq Army? Bush Asks
CAIRO — US President George W. Bush, Commander-in-Chief of the army, had a problem remembering how the Iraqi army was disbanded after the downfall of Baghdad in April 2003, The Independent reported on Tuesday, September 4.
"The policy was to keep the army intact," Bush told Robert Draper, author of the book Dead Certain: The Presidency of George Bush, published Tuesday.
Bush was stumped when asked how was it then that American administrator of Iraq Paul Bremer disbanded the army.
"Yeah, I can't remember; I'm sure I said, 'This is the policy, what happened?'"
Pressed on the question, Bush said the answer lies somewhere in the notes of National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley.
"Again, Hadley's got notes on all this stuff."
Bush's inability to remember the details of such a key decision in the early stage of the invasion-turned-occupation of Iraq drew immediate rebuke.
"Think about this. The dissolution of the Iraq military is one of the six most-criticized and most-often-discussed aspects of the administration's entire approach to Iraq," James Fallows of the Atlantic Monthly wrote in his blog.
" ... and the President who has staked the fortunes of his Administration, his party, his place in history, and (come to think of it ) his nation on the success of his Iraq policy cannot remember and even now cannot be bothered to find out how the decision was made."
