Should Vick Do Time?

by NAM (reposted)

Saturday, September 1, 2007 : After months in the media spotlight, NFL player Michael Vick apologized to the public and plead guilty to dog fighting conspiracy felony charges. Donny Lumpkins, 20, and YO!TV hit the streets of Oakland to find out how harshly Vick should be punished.
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Now that Michel Vick has pled guilty and a lot of the gritty details – like the rape stands – are out about his exploits in the illegal dog fighting underworld, I thought I’d hit the streets of Oakland to ask some people their opinions on the NFL star.

Two young black men wearing black sweatshirts and baggy jeans were more than eager to give their opinions.

“Man I think Mike Vick is so garbage,” said one of the young men when I asked him and his buddy what he thought of the NFL player.

His buddy continued to say: “F--k Michel Vick! How you gonna do some dumb-ass s--t like fight some dogs, my ni--a? You getting bread, my ni--a. What the f--k you need to fight some dogs for, my ni--a?”

This is a streaming MP4 video - you'll need Quicktime 6 or later to view it.

Most people I encountered had similar responses to questions about Vick, just not in such graphic language. The story evokes very strong emotions in people. One young white woman with oversized glasses and tattoos sprawled along her arms called Vick an a--hole three times to drive the point home about how she felt about him.

“It’s so horrible. It goes against nature what they were doing to these dogs,” she said.

§The case of NFL football star Michael Vick
by wsws (reposted)
Saturday, September 1, 2007 :Following a week of intense media scrutiny, Michael Vick, National Football League (NFL) quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, pled guilty on August 27 to federal dogfighting charges. Vick, whose sentencing is set for December 10, faces the possibility of up to 5 years in prison, but is expected to serve only 12 to 18 months due to his plea agreement.

In a public statement, Vick spoke directly to fans saying, “I want to apologize to all the young kids out there for my immature acts and, you know, what I did was ... very immature so that means I need to grow up. I totally ask for forgiveness and understanding as I move forward to bettering Michael Vick the person, not the football player.”

Vick had been indicted by a federal grand jury in July. The charges leveled against him were disturbing. The star athlete was indicted for financing and operating an interstate dogfighting enterprise called “Bad Newz Kennels,” using a property he owned in Virginia to train and house animals and to host fights. Vick is said to have been involved in the killing—by drowning, hanging, electrocution and other methods—of dogs that did not perform up to expectations.

Dogfighting, like cockfighting, is a savage blood sport in which two animals specially bred for combat are pitted against one another in a makeshift arena, often fighting to the death. Spectators gamble on the outcome of the event as they might on a boxing match or horse race. It is often the case that animals trained to fight in such competitions, when confiscated by authorities, must be euthanized due to the danger they present to humans. More than 50 fighting dogs seized from Vick’s kennel are expected to be destroyed.
