8/30: Delegation to SSA re: SS No Match rule

new regulations that could result in mass firings of immigrant workers
this fall.
Dear friends -
As many of you know, the Department of Homeland Security has implemented
new regulations that could result in mass firings of immigrant workers
this fall. If you haven't heard already, the new regulations require
employers to fire employees who are unable to fix problems with their
social security numbers 90 days after they've received a SSA no-match
letter, or else face stiff penalties if caught in an audit by the ICE.
This is a complete reversal from previous policy in which SSA no match
letters explicitly instructed employers not to take action against
workers based solely on the no match.
This is unacceptable! We need to respond!
This week, immigrant rights advocates around the country will be doing
delegations to regional offices of the Social Security Administration to
express our community's outrage for this attack on immigrant workers and
to ask SSA to send out the no-match letters to workers directly, not to
employers.
A couple of us are working to pull together a delegation to the western
region SSA office, based in San Francisco this Thursday, August 30th at
11 AM.
Please let me know if you, or anyone from your organization/union can
attend this delegation.
We will be having a conference call tomorrow (Tuesday, August 28th) at
10:30 to plan for the delegation. If you're able to call in, here's the
information you need:
Number: 1-866-316-1519
Passcode: 60475693
Also, just as a heads up, we're also working on putting together two
briefings / strategy sessions for folks working with immigrant workers
to share know-your-rights materials for workers and worksites, as well
as brainstorm broader, collective resistance to these new regulations.
These sessions will be Thursdays, September 13th (in Oakland) and
September 20th (in San Francisco) at 6:30 PM, locations TBA.
Let me know if you can make it on Thursday. Email me back, or call me on
my cell at 510-846-0766.
Brooke.

Maybe the workers should be using fraudulently obtained social security numbers. Instead of buying a social security card at a flea market, why can't they get their own ssn? Could it be that they are not eligable for their own ssn?
