Bail set in SF8 case

by SF 8 Case
report received at 11:39am
This is a brief, preliminary report on the long court session
underway today, August 22, in the San Francisco 8 case. A fuller
report will follow.

Judge Philip Moscone set bail for defendants in the case as follows:

Ray Boudreaux: $ 385,000
Richard Brown: $ 420,000
Richard O'Neal: $ 200,000
Hank Jones: $ 600,000
Harold Taylor: $ 350,000
Francisco Torres: $ 650,000

The judge said that "danger to public safety" was not an issue for
these defendants, so he arrived at a bail figure based on 1)
seriousness of the offenses charged (in the matter of the conspiracy
charge, he addressed only the overt acts alleged against each
defendant), and 2) likelihood to appear.

The total bail figure is $ 2,605,000, compared to a previous total of
$ 18,000,000. In California, if property is put up to guarantee bail,
the appraised value of the property must be twice the amount of the
bail.

More later.
