"An entirely new beast" Marijuana Initiative in Denver
“This is an entirely new beast..."

Denver City Attorney David Broadwell, referring to our latest
marijuana initiative in Denver
Dear SAFER Supporters:
I realize it has been a while since we've contacted you, and that is
partly due to some issues we had with our bulk e-mail system. But I
sure hope you are reading this message because there is important
news to report and we need your help now more than ever.
Denver election officials have approved the petition for our latest
ballot initiative in Denver, and it will be appearing on the upcoming
November 2007 ballot. If voters approve it, it would create a new city
ordinance designating marijuana possession the City's lowest law
enforcement priority. Moreover, it would make big waves in the world
of marijuana reform, especially in light of the Democratic National
Convention coming to town soon.
This new beast has teeth...
As you may know, Denver officials have ignored the historic
legalization measure we passed in 2005. Although they could have
implemented it, they chose to ignore it and continue enforcing the
state marijuana law in the city -- this is why we tried to change the
state law in 2006. This new initiative in Denver, however, is "an
entirely new beast," according to the city attorney. He said this
because....
If this latest Denver initiative passes, the City will have no choice
but to implement it!
To find out why, please read this guest editorial
from our campaign, which appeared yesterday in the Rocky Mountain
News, one of the state's major newspapers. It is aptly titled: "New
marijuana initiative has teeth."
PLEASE feed the beast!
As you can see, the stakes are higher than ever with this new
initiative.
Thus, I respectfully ask that you please visit our campaign site --
http://www.SaferDenver.com -- and make a contribution using your credit card
to support this effort. Or, if you would prefer to send a check or
money order, please make it out to "SAFER Voter Education Fund" or
"SVEF" and send it to SVEF, P.O. Box 40332, Denver, CO 80204.
An analysis of the previous votes in Denver show that we are likely
to win this thing as long as we get enough people out to vote. But
with few other items on this year's ballot, we need as much help as
possible getting voters to fill out and return their ballots in
October and November (this year's election will be conducted entirely
by mail). For example, a donation of just $50 would allow us to put a
door hanger on the doors of 500 Denver households reminding them to
vote, and a donation of $100 could purchase more than 1,000 pieces of
literature to distribute door-to-door and at events around the city.
Release the beast...
With your help, we can make this initiative a success and generate a
ton of STATEWIDE and NATIONAL coverage conveying our simple message:
marijuana is safer than alcohol and should be treated that way. Thus,
I hope you will consider supporting this effort even if you don't live
in Denver or Colorado. After all, federal drug warriors like the DEA
and ONDCP will likely be out here fighting us soon, so we need your
help to fight back.
As the chart below shows, we have managed to come quite a ways with
comparatively little to work with. This has been thanks to you and
your generosity -- as well as the help of organizations like MPP and
NORML -- and we hope you will continue to help us do the work we do
by quickly jumping on-line to make a contribution today.
I look forward to keeping you posted on the progress of the campaign
and thank you once again for your continued support of SAFER and the
SAFER Voter Education Fund.
Sincerely,
Mason Tvert
