O CASAMENTO DE ROMEU E JULIETA / Romeo and Juliet Get Married
dir. Bruno Barreto (2005, Brazil, 90 min.)
The Bard's oft-filmed tragic love story gets a raucously fresh and inventive retelling, Brazilian-style, from master filmmaker Bruno Barreto. This romantic comedy is set against the rivalry of São Paolo's two most popular soccer teams, Palmeiras and Corinthians. The screwball comedy gets at the heart of sports fanaticism while satirizing more serious forms of bigotry. Romeu is an ophthalmologist and leader of the Corinthians' cheering section. He falls for Julieta, a soccer player whose father is a rabid fan of the green-shirted Palmeiras. In an elaborate ruse to win over his potential father-in-law, Romeu pretends to be a fellow fan of the Green but risks losing his own family's respect and love who are radical Corinthians fans. The lie creates a series of hilarious and unexpected twists and turns, complicated and comedic situations that the characters get themselves into and make up the essence of this fast paced and very funny story.
* Portuguese with English subtitles.
General admission: $6
Students/Seniors/Disabled/ILFF members: $5
