Supes Put Muni Reform on the Ballot, But Will Newsom Lead?

by Paul Hogarth via Beyond Chron
Wednesday, August 1, 2007 : Supervisor Aaron Peskin should be strongly commended – he hammered out a Charter Amendment to revamp our troubled transit agency that, while nobody’s perfectly satisfied with it, everyone can agree it’s a step in the right direction. Yesterday, the Board voted 7-4 to place it on the November ballot with wide support from labor unions, the MTA, and bus rider groups – and environmental groups should soon get on board too.
Most importantly, the Charter Amendment saves us from an unspeakable risk – letting a wealthy developer who has bankrolled a draconian parking measure take away our basic tools to fight global warming. Ironically, it is Peskin’s parking provision in the final Charter Amendment that has made the Chamber of Commerce balk, while Mayor Gavin Newsom’s support for the whole package is now in question. As he hopes to build a political career beyond San Francisco, will Newsom risk being behind the curve on basic transit reform?
