NOW Opposes Nomination of James Holsinger for Surgeon General

by Julia Fedor via NOW (reposted)
Wednesday, July 11, 2007 : NOW opposes the nomination of Dr. James Holsinger Jr. for U.S. Surgeon General based in part because he has a history of outspoken prejudice against gays and lesbians. As a member of the United Methodist Judicial Council, he contested a decision to let a lesbian serve as an associate pastor and he supported a pastor who would not allow an openly gay man to join the church.
In 1991, Holsinger published a paper titled "Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality," equating homosexuality with disease. Additionally, Holsinger promotes gay and lesbian "reparative therapy," an alarming practice that is not condoned by any professional psychological association.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the surgeon general is "America's chief health educator, giving Americans the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury." NOW expresses concern over Holsinger's ability to employ objective scientific information above ideology and to serve the health needs of every individual in our nation, including the LGBT community.

A native of Kansas, Holsinger has a doctorate in anatomy and physiology and a medical degree from Duke University. He also holds a master's degree in hospital financial management, a master's degree in biblical studies from Asbury Theological Seminar, and a bachelor's degree in human studies from the University of Kentucky. Holsinger currently serves as Wethington Chair in Health Sciences and professor of preventive medicine at the University of Kentucky College of Public Health.
