Ramallah - Ma'an - Former Palestinian information minister and head of the Palestinian National Initiative party, Dr Mustafa Barghouthi, has launched, with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a new initiative to resolve the ongoing Hamas-Fatah dispute.
In a press conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Barghouthi and Khalida Jarrar from the PFLP stressed that, in spite of the conflict between Fatah and Hamas, the main conflict remains between "us and the occupation".
Jarrar explained that their initiative contains five elements:
1. Stop all forms of incitement through the media and other means of incitement and provocative acts.
2. Retreat from the consequences of Hamas' military act in the Gaza Strip and dissolve the unity government and the emergency government.
3. Retract all the decisions made in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip [since Hamas' takeover] and form a new unity government agreed upon on the basis of retaining the departments' unity. Also, build an independent judicial system and reform the security bodies, free from factionalism.
4. Secure the national accord and seek a decision from the Palestinian people through presidential and legislative elections following a proportional system.
5. Immediately return to working through the Higher Committee for National Dialogue, which was assigned in Cairo; reform the Palestine Liberation Organization and carry out elections for the Palestinian National Council both inside the country and, where possible, in the Palestinian Diaspora.
Earlier, Barghouthi confirmed that the PNI and the PFLP attempted to include more factions in their initiative, but they still have steps to complete in order to achieve this.
