UC reaches agreement with UPTE on wage increases for lower-paid employees

by UC (reposted)
University of California officials announced today (June 27) an agreement with the University Professional and Technical Employees union regarding special wage increases for lower-paid employees.
The agreement affects approximately 5000 UC research support and technical employees who work in titles that are paid on average less than $40,000 per year, and represents a total cost to the university of approximately $1.2 million.

Effective April 1, 2007, employees represented by UPTE who work in titles that are paid less than $40,000 a year on average shall receive salary increases as follows:

* Employees earning $34,500 or less: 1.95% salary increase
* Employees earning $34,501 - $35,500: 0.95% salary increase
* Employees earning $35,001 - $39,999: 0.5% salary increase

In March 2007, UC reached an agreement with the Coalition of University Employees union regarding special raises for more than 11,800 UC clerical employees (http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/2007/mar23.html), and also provided similar raises to approximately 4,000 non-represented lower-paid employees. In May 2007, UC reached an agreement with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union regarding special wage increases for 14,300 service and patient care employees (http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/2007/may22.html).

This is not the first time UC has taken special measures to give additional financial support to its lower-paid staff. In 2000, UC sought and received an additional $19 million in state funding to boost employee salaries, the majority of which went to employees earning $40,000 or less (http://www.ucop.edu/news/archives/2000/salaries111600.html), and in 2002, as it had done several times previously, UC gave eligible employees additional retirement funds to help mitigate disappointing salary increases due to limited state funding (http://www.ucop.edu/news/archives/2002/nov15art1.htm).

§UC Reaches Wage Agreement With Union
by Alina Xu, Daily Cal (reposted)
Monday, July 9, 2007 : The UC system announced an agreement on June 27 with the University Professional and Technical Employees union, resulting in a wage increase for lower-paid employees represented by the union.

The agreement, which will be effective retroactively to April 1, 2007, will affect about 5,000 workers throughout the UC system, including animal technicians, lab assistants and some research employees.

The university will grant a 1.95 percent wage increase for employees earning $34,500 or less a year, a 0.95 percent increase to employees earning $34,501 to $35,500 a year, and a 0.5 percent increase to employees earning $35,500 to $39,999 a year.

The cost to the university is about $1.2 million, which comes out of annual funding from the state for operating costs, said UC spokesperson Paul Schwartz.

Some union officials said they were pleased that union employees would receive the increase.

“We’re very glad that people who are making under $40,000 are getting this increase. We do feel that there are many other people who are also underpaid,” said Tanya Smith, the president of the union’s Local 1, which represents UC Berkeley employees and those in the UC Office of the President.

The University of California reached an accord with the University Professional and Technical Employees union (UPTE) June 27 in regard to a wage increase for lower-paid technical employees.

About 5,000 UC employees are affected by the agreement, mainly in fields such as research, support and technical employees who work in titles paid less than $40,000 per year.

Employees earning $34,500 or less will receive a 1.95 percent salary increase and employees in the $34,501 to $35,500 range will get a .95 percent increase, while employees in the $35,501 to $39,999 bracket collect a salary increase of .5 percent.

The agreement, which has been backdated to take effect Apr. 1, 2007, should cost the University of California approximately $1.2 million in total.

This agreement is part of an ongoing effort by the UC system to increase the wages of its lower-paid employees.

A similar agreement was reached in March 2007 when the University of California finished talks with the Coalition of University Employees union, which raised wages of almost 12,000 UC clerical employees.

In May, the UC finished negotiations with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union and agreed to special wage increases for 14,300 service- and patient-care employees.
