SF Holds Hearing on Controversial Building Plan
Wednesday, June 27, 2007 :SAN FRANCISCO -- The City College of San Francisco will hold a community hearing on the controversial building plan in Chinatown, reports the Chinese-language newspaper Ming Pao Daily. The public hearing would be a good opportunity for Chinese-American residents to express their opinions, the Ming Pao Daily reports.
Mandarin and Cantonese interpreters will be at the meeting to provide translation. The he City College of San Francisco's proposal for a 16-story building in Chinatown across the street from the historic Portsmouth Square met resistance from Sen. Leland Yee and the Education Coalition for Responsible Development, a group of community and business organizations. The building would cast a shadow over Portsmouth Square, they say, and intensify traffic congestion in the area. City College released an environmental impact report last month, also available in Chinese, to provide an analysis on the effect on issues including land use, visual impact, and historical buildings in the surrounding area. On June 24, the Sing Tao Daily published a letter asking for the public to express their preferences and help expedite the building of the city college campus. The letter included three choices for the height of the building and the number of building on the campus.Read More
