Chinese Protesters Support Embattled S.F. Supervisor

by New America Media (reposted)
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 :SAN FRANCISCO -- Nearly 200 people took to the streets of the predominantly Chinese Sunset neighborhood on June 24 in support of embattled City Supervisor Ed Jew, reports the Chinese-language newspaper Ming Pao Daily.
Marching down Irving Street from 19th Avenue to 32nd Avenue, the protesters asked bystanders to sign petitions in support of Jew. But many residents refused to sign the petition. Jew is facing criminal charges that he does not live in the Sunset District, which he represents. The scandal broke when the San Francisco supervisor was being investigated by the FBI for allegedly accepting $40,000 from Quickly, a tapioca tea chain, in exchange for helping the chain with city permit issues. Following intense media attention over the last month, City Attorney Dennis Herrera has asked the state attorney general for permission to file a lawsuit that could unseat Jew. Protesters said that Jew is a victim of political sabotage, but other residents disagree and told protesters that Jew should go back to his Burlingame residence, where the city attorney's office alleged he lives. Protesters argue that even though the investigation doesn't seem to have racial undertones, Ed Jew is in fact a victim of discrimination.
