SoCal Vietnamese Protest President's Visit

by New America Media (reposted)
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 :DANA POINT, Calif. -- Thousands of Vietnamese Americans showed up to protest Vietnam President Do Minh Triet's visit here last weekend after he met President Bush in Washington, D.C., reports Vietnamese newspaper Nguoi Viet.
Protesters waved the South Vietnamese flag (three red horizontal stripes against gold background) and anti-communist signs outside a resort where the president was staying in Orange County's Dana Point. Others held posters of Father Nguyen Van Ly, a well-known political dissident, who was recently shown in a video being physically forced into silence by Vietnamese guards at his anti-propaganda trial. The image has been broadcasted across the globe, including in the United States. Many among the protesters were young Vietnamese Americans. According to human rights groups, Vietnam began cracking down on political dissidents after it was accepted in the WTO and the sweep is the worst in 20 years.
