The House of Representatives passed a resolution on Monday by a voice vote, celebrating the 35th anniversary and accomplishments of Title IX of the Higher Education Act, which codified educational equality for women and men. Title IX banned discrimination based on gender in federally funded educational programs, and ensured that women receive equal opportunities.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) issued a statement following the resolution's passage, saying, "By ending gender discrimination in all education programs, Title IX has given women the chance to excel and to take their rightful place as leaders and achievers on campuses across the United States. No longer would young women find their educational options limited by years of engrained discrimination. Thanks to Title IX, women can now prepare for their future - whether in the halls of power or corporate boardrooms - in the classrooms and on the playing fields of America's colleges and universities."

The late Representative Patsy Mink of Hawaii was one of the authors of Title IX. She was honored last night in Washington, DC for leading the fight for gender equality in education. Speaker Pelosi contributed to the celebration of Representative Mink, saying, "For her determination, the women of America will always owe a debt of gratitude to Congresswoman Patsy Mink."
