The news gets worse and worse. Not only is there a rape epidemic (4X the statewide average!) in Santa Cruz, but the police could care less!! Greensite confirms that only 13% of rape cases result in an arrest. Yet Mayor Reilly, Cynthia Mathews, and Deputy Chief Patty Sapone all blame the District Attorney for failing to prosecute! As Greensite points out "you can't have a conviction without an arrest."

Statewide, 40% of reported rapes result in an arrest.

Only councilmember Tony Madrigal stood out as understanding the gravity of these rape statistics and spoke in favor of adopting the recommendations of the Commission for Prevention of Violence Against Women. Could this be the reason that Tony was "outed" for private comments he made to a police officer during a ride-a-long about a woman's body?

Why not blame the only true advocate of women for being mysogynist? It lets supposedly women-friendly members (Reilly, Mathews and SCPD's Patty Sapone) off the hook.

Greensite herself, after conducting extensive research and reporting on this dangerous phenomenon, was denied another term on the CPVAW commission.

Police ineptitude in rape cases appears to be the problem. Officers fail to conduct proper investigations, have failed to do the forensic analysis that is required to make an arrest or conviction, and don't even keep the CPVAW's manual on rape investigation procedures in their squad cars. Sapone incredulously defended this saying "We can't MAKE them carry the manuals in their vehicles!"

Councilman Mike Rotkin takes the cake for watering down all CPVAW proposals. He effectively snubbed all Santa Cruz women--showing that their physical safety is a low priority for him, instead favoring a Chamber of Commerce-style whitewash designed to reassure both tourists and parents of UCSC students alike that their is no rape crisis.

Greensite also researched the common belief that homeless people are responsible for the high rape rate. She found that this was not statistically true, but that homeless women suffered an unusually high rape rate vs housed women. No surprise here.
