"Animal Abuse Protest" at Belmont Lunardi's Supermarket
Members of East Bay Animal Advocates staged a protest, Sunday, June 10, in front of Lunardi's Market in Belmont to draw attention to what they allege is animal cruelty behind the production of eggs sold by Lunardi's.
East Bay Animal Advocates (EBAA) allege in their pamphlet that the chickens used to produce eggs sold by Lunardi's food chain are kept in small cages, which allows the birds no mobility. Several brands of eggs are sold at Lunardi's, at least two are certified organic and cage free. The brands in question are the ones bearing the United Egg Producers (UEP) Label - http://www.uepcertified.com - such as, Lunardi's own house label. The trade organization UEP claims that their egg farmers use humane production methods. However, on the website of Compassion over killing -http://www.cok.net/camp/acc/ is an article stating that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) forced UEP to change it's previous logo -"animal Care Certified." The new logo states,"United Egg Producers Certified, Produced in compliance with the United Egg Producers' animal husbandry guidlines."
