SF Fed Bldg Die In for Peace in Iraq

by Jeff Paterson, Courage to Resist (jeff [at] paterson.net)
SAN FRANCISCO (June 7, 2007) -- Dozens of people gathered at the San Francisco Federal Building this afternoon to vigil and conduct civil disobedience to oppose the ongoing occupation war in Iraq. Organized by Declaration of Peace Bay Area, this event takes place every first Thursday of each month. While many tried to block the entrance to the building, the names of Iraqi war dead were read.

There were actually about 9 or 10 arrests that day.
by Jeff Paterson
As noted, photo #10 "Only arrest of the day" is incorrect. There were nine people arrested--out of approx. two dozen who were risking arrest. Most of the arrests took place when a group of protesters entered the Federal Building lobby and staged a die in at the security metal detectors. All arrested were released after a couple of hours.

Thanks, folks, for putting your bodies and minds on the line, and for doing that so often. Thanks also to all who support such acts of nonviolent civil disobedience.

Our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are being used to secure profits for the wealthy and powerful. Many have died; many more have been injured, physically and mentally, some terribly. The irony is that they are considered heroes, when most are really victims, while you who take a stand against this so-called war on terror are demonized, arrested, jailed, subjected to court costs, and/or fined.

You deserve better. So do our troops. So do we all, including the 655,000 Iraqis who have died on Bush's watch.
