ARTworkSF Gallery (49 Geary Street, San Francisco) presents: Rubberneck

by ARTworkSF
For the persistent observer, the private voyeur, or the consistent gawker. Street and documentary photographers exemplify the need to “see” in the visual arts by capturing the fleeting moments that flash before our eyes. The immediacy of the medium allows moments to become historical documents, evidence of “life” in the sense of humanity exposed, raw and unscripted.
ABOUT THE SHOW:
For the persistent observer, the private voyeur, or the consistent gawker. Street and documentary photographers exemplify the need to “see” in the visual arts by capturing the fleeting moments that flash before our eyes. The immediacy of the medium allows moments to become historical documents, evidence of “life” in the sense of humanity exposed, raw and unscripted. Rubberneck is an exploration of street and documentary photography and what it is that compels each photographer to snap the shutter. Documentary photographs have the power to attract us as viewers because of our ability to study them in extreme detail. The photographs may show us things we have never seen before, exposing us to scenes and moments from the safety of the page, print, or frame while leaving a vivid impression in our minds. A photo may have been taken for reasons of social concerns, sensationalism of the moment, or as an indication of the times. All of these reasons make up the photographer's tradition of wanting to bear witness. As viewers, we rely on the visual language of photography to create and connect with these experiences.

ABOUT ARTworkSF:
ARTworkSF has supported the efforts of local artists through an exhibits program that delivers a fresh approach to the art gallery world by taking their exhibits out of the conventional gallery space and into the community.
Founded in 1992, ARTworkSF is a visual arts organization that supports the development of new work from emerging and mid-career artists in the Bay Area. The ARTworkSF Gallery in Union Square (San Francisco) opened in July 2006 and presents over 100 artists annually and features monthly thematic exhibits in addition to monthly solo shows. Other ARTworkSF programs provide art to local businesses, produce community cultural events and provide support services for Bay Area artists.

We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
