Our green-collar jobs campaign is making waves in Washington, DC
Our green-collar jobs campaign is making waves in Washington, DC! Ella Baker Center
President and Co-Founder Van Jones testified before Congress on Tuesday, May 22nd to
encourage lawmakers to create a national Clean Energy Jobs Corps. Along with our
good friends at the national Apollo Alliance and other experts, Van explained the
job-creating potential of the emerging green economy at a hearing of the House's new
Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.

Earlier this year, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi led the way in creating the
Select Committee, Congress' first meaningful forum to address the global climate
crisis. Congresswoman Hilda Solis, a progressive Democrat from Southern California,
sits on the committee and is drafting legislation with several other Members that
will invest in green jobs as a means to fight both poverty and global warming. The
Ella Baker Center has helped shape this proposal, and our hope is that Congress may
eventually provide federal funding for green-collar job training around the country
in industries like green construction, renewable energy, alternative fuel and urban
agriculture!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

At the Ella Baker Center's headquarters in Oakland, we're gearing up for our rally
for the Oakland Green Jobs Corps on Tuesday, June 12. This event, co-sponsored by
the Oakland Apollo Alliance and Urban Habitat, is crucial for showing City Council
the strength of Oakland's movement for eco-equity and green-collar jobs. Following
the rally, the City Council will discuss whether to fund the Oakland Green Jobs
Corps training program. The future of green jobs in Oakland is at stake - the Ella
Baker Center needs your help to make our shared vision a reality. We hope you can
join us!

WHAT: Rally for the Oakland Green Jobs Corps
WHEN: Tuesday, June 12th
9:15am - 10:00am

In City Hall to the National Mall, our campaign for green-collar jobs is gaining
momentum. Thank you for being a part of this effort -- we can't do this without you!

Many thanks,

Ian Kim
