SF mayoral candidates- Naked Yoga Guy plus an unknown progressive

by tbl
......
SF Mayor race broadens.
........
SF Mayor Race draws unknown progressive,
plus Naked Yoga Guy
....

Supervisor Daly is organizing a progressive convention to nominate a left alternative to Mayor Gavin Newsom. For details, please see SF Chronicle
( http://www.sfGate.com ).

Most strong candidates don't want to get beaten in 2007 by Newsom;
they'd rather wait four years, then run for a vacant post.
As for weak candidates, willing to play the role of symbolic sacrificial lamb, we need a
transgendered lesbian feminist who belongs to at least two oppressed ethnic groups
( like Asian/Latina )...

Meanwhile, please remember that each SF citizen gets THREE VOTES for Mayor (under our new Ranked Choice Voting system, also known as "instant runoff").
That means you can have your protest and also help choose the next mayor. You can cast vote #1 for a weak candidate who has no chance of winning; then cast votes #2 and #3 for strong candidates.

This opens the door for all sorts of causes,
such as animal rights, world peace, naturism ( nudism), vegetarianism, yoga....

And so, you guessed it, San Francisco's
Naked Yoga Guy,
George Davis,
is seeking symbolic votes.

[ Email from George Davis
to Tortuga Bi Liberty,
circa 15 May 2007]

I filed to run for mayor of San Francisco
yesterday
and will change my voter registration today
from Republican to Non-Partisan
[ Decline to State] ,
since this a non partisan race.

Nothing will really happen until June 1
when I can begin collecting signatures in lieu of a
filing fee. I suspect that the campaign will really
get noticed from then on.

A group of us are trying to persuade the San
Francisco World Naked Bike Ride to ride through Golden
Gate Park this year. The event begins noon, June 9,
Saturday at Justin Herman Plaza, behind the Hyatt
Regency Hotel.

So far the slogan of the day is:
With rank choice voting,
being mayor of San Francisco is
as easy as One, Two, Three.
George Davis - Number 1
Gavin Newsom - Number 2 and
somebody else- Number 3

This is a one issue campaign. Make Golden Gate Park
Clothing Optional; and I will make Gavin Newsom the
City Manager; you are going to get Gavin no matter
what you do.

There is $850,000 in public matching funding on the
table which I can and will treat as an art grant to
spend on concerts and public art.

Finally, I am going to form a Free Body Culture
movement for out of town donors to contribute to.

I plan to run the B2B starting at Hayes and
Octavia, but quietly, with no special recognition
other than going bare at the appropriate time and
having a good time.

Tortuga, you are one of the first people that I
have notified of the decision to proceed.
You may reprint this bulletin.

"As an individual voter,
I will give George Davis my first vote.
(I don't yet know who will get my
second and third votes.)
However, SUN doesn't endorse candidates." ]

Your post is largely focused on shedding light on other areas, but.... just to clarify, with ranked choice voting, each person still only has one vote, but they have three rankings. That distinction is important as your lower-ranked choices never count as votes against your top-ranked choice. See http://www.instantrunoff.com

So rank away!
(1) After reading the SF Bay Guardian on Wednesday,
I'm guessing that Supervisor Daly will run for Mayor --
IF none of the other leasders is willing.

So at least we won't have a convention which can't produce a candidate.

For Daly, 2007 is a "free ride"
(he keeps his Supervisor seat while he runs for Mayor);
and he has nothing much to lose, anyway.
Daly can "afford" to be beaten by Newsom.

Gonzalez and Mirkarimi do have something to lose.
Each of them has a fair chance at being elected Mayor
next time
( 2011 ?),
when the seat is vacant.

If Migden would beat Newsom,
she could avoid conflict in June 2008 with Leno.

Thanks for the clarification
about terminology
of Ranked Choice Voting.
