Ignore the TV: May Day in Oaxaca / Que ignora la tele: El primero de mayo en Oaxaca

by danielsan
Events taking place tomorrow, International Workers Day, demonstrate the beginning of a resurgence in protest in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Ignore the television, which tells you that resistance is over.

In the coming months, the calendar shows International Labor Day, Teachers Day (May 15), the usual start of the annual Teachers' strike, and the first anniversary of the violent June 14 eviction which launched the annual teachers strike into the forefront of global resistance.

According to Nancy Davies' article titled "In Oaxaca, The Show Goes On" tomorrow will see a resurgence in public protest as the movement for justice and against the impunity claimed by the PRIista state government comes out to protest visibly and in large numbers. Tentative protests *have* taken the streets in the months since 2007 arrived, like the 10th Megamarcha on International Women's Day: ( http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2007/03/83837.html ), but the climate of fear and repression have shoved the movement into a new period.

A strong showing on May Day would be "the first direct challenge to the governor since the November crackdown" in Davies' words.

In other words, stay tuned. After months of organizing in secret after being forced underground, sources in Oaxaca are saying that teachers, students, labor organizations, and the APPO with all of these manifestations and more, will be coming out again in the days to follow.

The struggle continues.
