CALIFORNIA: Bill banning teen drivers from talking on cell phones passes state Senate

by Johanna
This article discussed the issue of banning cell phone use from drivers under the age of eighteen. I feel it is unfair to single out a particular group when the issue affects everyone on the road.
Dear Editor,

I recently read the article entitled Bill banning teen drivers from talking on cell phones passes state Senate, by Gary Richards, a few days ago. I agree with the Senate’s decision to ban cell phones being used on the road, yet I don’t feel that was the focus of this article. When I read the title of the article what stood out to me was “teen drivers.” Since when does cell phone use on the road only affect the safety of teen drivers? I think it is important that we all take extra precautions when driving on the road today, but to single out teenage drivers really bothered me. I understand that the majority of car accidents happen due to teenage mistakes on the road, but that doesn’t eliminate the accidents that occur due to drivers over the age of eighteen. I just don’t understand how one can be eighteen years old in this country, which is considered the beginning of their adult years, yet they are still being singled out on issues that they shouldn’t be.

All I’m trying to say is that to single out a group of people, not only makes them feel bad but makes them want to go against the authority that treated them badly in the first place. To eliminate cell phone use on the road from drivers of all ages would improve the safety on the road, and would also stay clear from singling out a group of people.
