Free The UC Banners
Two UC Berkeley students descended from the heights of a redwood tree near Sproul Plaza Wednesday and submitted themselves for arrest by the UCPD after one week of tree-sitting.
The Phoenix Coalition to Free UC was launched in March 2007 by a broad cross-section of the student community who are seeking to overcome what they see as numerous systemic problems. The mission statement of the group: “We are a coalition dedicated to the transformation of the University from an elitist, corporate, militaristic, autocratic institution into a responsible, just, diverse, equitable, democratically-governed body that educates and works for the public welfare. We seek to build a radical student movement that will use nonviolent direct action to create pressure for structural change of the University."
