Mumia's Legal Defense: Correct place to send donations

by John Thielking
A letter and check that I sent to the Black United Fund in January 2007 on behalf of Mumia Abu-Jamal was shredded by the Post Office.
Apparently this is the wrong address to send Mumia donations to:

National Black United Fund
40 Clinton St
Newark, NJ 07102

because the letter I sent to that address was sent to the dead letter office and remained there for 3 months until it was opened by a postal worker. They found the check that I had sent for the legal defense of Mumia and made a copy of it and sent it back to me. I received the copy just today. I am a bit perplexed as to why the letter would end up in the dead letter office since I always put postage and a return address on all of my mail.

I can't rule out the possibility that the same people who are so eagerly marking up all the prisoners' mail with heavy black markers before they return them undelivered did a number on my piece of mail sent to the Black United Fund. I did after all send a non-secure communication to Mumia advising him that I was sending a check to the Black United Fund. It is of course possible that the ink on the return address got smudged after getting wet. I tested the ink and it doesn't run. But some just barely wet paper could wear off on the outside of the envelope, and not the inside, since the image of the check appears completely normal. Or a bunch of previously soaked letters could just all stick together and not peel apart easily, like that folded up note that went through the washing machine -- though it would be harder to explain how the check appears normal in that case.

At least I know that SOME of the workers at the post office are actually doing their job the way they are supposed to. It used to be the case that dead letters would sit around for years before anyone would open them.

The correct address to send donations for Mumia's legal defense to has been given by Robert Bryan as:

Make checks payable to "National Lawyers Guild Foundation"

and send to

Committee To Save Mumia Abu-Jamal
P.O. Box 2012
New York, NY 10159

Send the mail by certified mail and
hopefully their PO Box, and the USPS delivery truck, are water proof!
