Sexual Assault in Santa Cruz
A response to recent sexual attacks in Santa Cruz
In response to the recent sexual assault on a Santa Cruz resident Wednesday and the string of attacks that have occurred on women this winter I am left thinking about my own safety here in Santa Cruz.
As a young woman I have always been aware of the possible danger of attack and sexual assault. It is something you learn to live with, being constantly aware of your surroundings when walking alone, often opting to travel in groups, abiding by the “buddy system” in most situations. Unlike my male counterparts I have to be constantly aware when I walk alone at night, even a short walk to the bus stop comes with a degree of alert. This is the way of life for most women; it is something that women have been condition to deal with. However, with protecting my safety I often have to put my protection over my independence.
With independence there comes a degree of vulnerability. In spite of this I believe that though education, awareness, and empowerment of women in our community, women can not only protect themselves, but their independence.
