Response to Article
We had an assignment for my class to write a letter to the editor.
I’m writing in response to the article “New U.S. Command Prompts Fear in Africa” published on April 23, 2007 in the San Francisco Chronicle. Do they not realize that Africa is in a state of devastation? In Northern Uganda 1.5 million people are forced to live in displacement camps with more than 1,000 people dying every week due to the inhumane conditions. Ethiopia suffers while only 24 percent of the population has access to clean water and in the Horn of Africa 14.3 million are on the verge of starvation. In Sub-Saharan Africa nearly two-thirds of the population is HIV positive leaving thousands of children orphaned. This is a crisis that would not be tolerated in the United States. With all that I have to read about the government sending troops to Africa to find terrorists and to secure the oil production before China gains too much influence on it. Our government needs to stop spending so much money on this “War on Terrorism” and fighting over oil. Instead, maybe they should try to supply for the needs of their people and our fellow human beings.
