There's Still Hope

by Tyler Pitts
"Free World Kresge" was an event held at UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, April 21. The feeling of community and spirit of togetherness that could be seen at Free World Kresge is a sign that our generation can overcome the problems facing us.
On Saturday April 21, “Free World Kresge” was held in the Kresge apartments at UC Santa Cruz. The event lasted for several hours and brought together dozens of participants who joined to celebrate life. Those who came were treated to live student music, arts and crafts, a barbeque, and most markedly, the opportunity to connect with others in the community.

Free World Kresge might have been a small-scale event, but this doesn’t diminish its importance. Gatherings like this show that not everyone in our society has gotten lost in the hustle and bustle of modern life. In a culture of individualism, there is still room for collective spirit, cooperation, and love to shine through. Everything at Free World Kresge was organized and run by students affiliated with no specific group or cause. This was much simpler than anything like that. This was people coming together for no reason other than the simple enjoyment that can be found in coming together

Seeing signs like this gives me hope for our generation. We don’t have to accept the limitations placed upon us by those who came before. The world we inherit will be full of violence, oppression, hatred, and a competitive individualistic ideology that only perpetuates these cancers. But we still have a chance. We have a chance to change all this, to transform our world into one that fosters caring, harmony, collaboration, and above all else, love. To do any of this, we first have to find ways to work together. Free World Kresge is a sign that this is possible.
