the w-word
this is my letter to the editor of CNN, in response to his article about "Commentary: The hypocrisy of repeating the 'w-word'".
I agree with Navarrette that when people are criticizing others about using racial slurs, that they themselves should not be repeating the terms. As he pointed out in his article, when people are referring to the N-word that someone else may have used, they would not repeat the longer version of the N-word. Nor would people be repeating the F-word either that Navarrette mentioned. People should be more aware of how they are phrasing their words, becomes carelessness sometimes result to people saying things that may not be originally intended by the speaker. An interesting thing is also I feel like this is more in America, where people would use slangs that can be degrading to certain stereotypical groups. Back in Taiwan, we have certain words to describe the similar stereotype groups, but they are official words that are politically correct. People are not familiar with the concept of using slangs that are degrading such as how Americans may use the w-word, f-word, or n-word. So maybe people need to start thinking about how their freedom of speech may be hurting and affecting others.
