Letter to the Editor of CHP
This is just a brief letter to the editor I wrote to CHP regarding an article wriiten in Volume 41. Issue 19.
This letter is regarding the story on gender-neutral bathrooms featured in the March 8th issue of CHP. I was really proud that CHP was willing to express concern over the issue of a lack of gender-neutral bathrooms and housing on campus. However, in dealing with speaking of issues of transgender individuals, I feel you failed to correctly address them.
Perhaps it is simply a typographical error, but in one of the sentences, one of the interviewees is referred to simply as a “transgender”. One would not say “a gay” or “a Black”, yet in this age, there are still subtle but harmful discriminations against difference. The article was generally forced into a binary gender issue. Although, dialogue about gender was encouraged, the general theme of the article seemed to be that gender-neutral bathrooms and housing are necessary for transgender students, not because the idea is out-dated. I hope in the future, CHP will view the issue of gendered bathrooms as a problem that affects all of us not just gender non-conforming individuals.
