Upcoming March of May 1st
Wondering why people in small towns are not aware of the upcoming march on May 1st. Does it have to do with citizenz atitudes towards the marches? Or are townspeople unaware of the media coverage that has been given to the this years first of may marches?
I have been reading articles about the upcoming march on May 1st, and I have to recognize that they took me by surprise, since I did not know once again they were going to be held nation wide. I immediately put myself to the task and called up my neighbors and friends back home, who had participated in the march last year and asked them if they had heard anything in the radio about the upcoming march, they said no and admitted they were surprised they were going to be held again, since they had not heard any publicity to promote the event. Immediately I wondered, will the “Sleeping Giant”, as many people have come to call the activist movements that developed for immigrant equality in the marches of 2006, cause as much upheaval as it did the previous year? Will corporations and industries be showing solidarity to the upcoming march of May 1st, if so which ones? Will the numbers of people who support these marches change drastically?
Recalling, last year’s promotion of May first in Newspapers and on television, this year’s media coverage has diminished, not to a great extent, but none the less it has diminished enough for people who were involved in the marches last year to not know about them this year. But the question is why? What has changed? Is there not enough people organizing the marches this year, if so why not? Could it possibly be that people like myself have not been attentive enough to notice the coverage that is being given to the upcoming marches?
Despite the peoples unawareness of the upcoming marches plenty of cities such as San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Oakland, Watsonville, Salinas, Los Angeles, Denver, Tucson, Chicago, New York, Washington, and Pittsburgh along with many others have already proclaimed May 1st as a marching day. All that is left to do for students and citizens that do know about the continuous fight for immigrant equality, through the marches of May 1st, is to spread the word to their fellow students, co-workers, bosses, family members and friends. The more people who know and engage in the marches and help out with our struggle as immigrants, members of this society and nation, the greater the impact will be.
