NEWS FROM NANCY

Dear Karen,

Just days ago the Supreme Court sent pro-choice Americans a most
grim reminder of why elections matter.

By upholding the Federal Abortion Ban, the Supreme Court has
given the green light to the anti-choice movement to broaden its
attacks on safe, legal abortion without any regard for a woman's
health. Our opponents understand exactly what this ruling means:

:: Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue: "The court has
now said it's OK to ban procedures. We can do more than just put
hurdles in front of women seeking abortions - we can put
roadblocks in front of them."
:: Roberta Combs, president of the Christian Coalition of
America: "It is just a matter of time before the infamous Roe v.
Wade... will also be struck down by the court."
:: Leslee Unruh, an anti-abortion activist in South Dakota who
helped lead the abortion ban in that state: "I'm ecstatic...
It's like someone gave me $1 million and told me, 'Leslee, go
shopping.' That's how I feel."

So how are we going to defeat this ban now that Bush's
appointees upheld it? We're starting an all-out campaign to
support the Freedom of Choice Act. Click here:
https://secure.ga0.org/02/_FAB_Upheld_ENews/n1dL6NL61W5S0?

But this legislation is just the first step. To ensure we never
face an attack like this again, we're not stopping until we've
elected a pro-choice President in 2008!

There are many ways you can fight back: donate, contact your
members of Congress, watch the first presidential debates next
week, share your thoughts on our blog - keep reading to learn
more.

If you believe that women and their doctors should never be
forced into making difficult, personal, medical decisions based
on extremist politics - then you must stand up and fight back on
all fronts.

My best,

Nancy Keenan
President, NARAL Pro-Choice America

HELP US FIGHT THE BAN: GIVE TODAY AND SUPPORT THE FREEDOM OF
CHOICE ACT!

The Supreme Court has done the unthinkable and upheld an
abortion ban with no exception for a woman's health. This
sweeping, irresponsible, and dangerous ban must not go
unchallenged. Today NARAL Pro-Choice America is fighting back
with an all-out campaign for the Freedom of Choice Act.

The Freedom of Choice Act is a bill that would codify Roe v.
Wade into law, and guarantee the right to choose for generations
to come. As the political leader of the pro-choice movement,
NARAL Pro-Choice America is the organization to make this
legislation happen, but we need your help to do it. Please click
here to support our work at this critical time:

FIND OUT: WHERE DO THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES STAND ON
CHOICE?

The Federal Abortion Ban made clear that Bush's new appointees
to the Supreme Court are changing the direction of women's
reproductive rights in this country. The bottom line: elections
matter, from the White House to the state house.

Find out where the presidential candidates stand on choice by
watching the first televised presidential debates! The
Democratic debate will be held on April 26 at 7 pm EDT, and the
Republican debate is set for May 3 at 8 pm EDT. Both will air
live on MSNBC. As you know, anti-choice extremists in both major
parties have their sights set on 2008. That is why it's crucial
that every American knows where all the presidential candidates
stand on a woman's right to choose.

After you hear what the candidates have to say, please thank the
Democratic Party for its pro-choice platform. Click here:

Click here to tell the Republican Party to step up and endorse
commonsense ways to prevent unintended pregnancy in its
platform:
http://prochoiceaction.org/campaign/mh2wh_rep_petition/wix3k3g2hx7w3jk?

The first step to electing a pro-choice President in 2008 starts
now, with you.

CHOICE IN THE NEWS

GOOD: FIRST PRO-CHOICE MEASURE ENACTED IN COLORADO IN MORE THAN
A DECADE
Last month, Gov. Bill Ritter (D) put prevention first by signing
SB 60 into law. This measure will help to ensure that women who
have survived sexual assault are provided with information about
emergency contraception in the emergency room. This is an
important first step forward for women's health. Kudos to our
affiliate, NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado, for its hard work making
this bill a reality!

BAD: ANTI-CHOICE GROUPS SUE FDA OVER PLAN B
Two anti-choice groups, the Family Research Council and
Concerned Women for America, showed their true agenda by suing
the FDA for approving the emergency contraceptive Plan B for
over-the-counter sales. Apparently, improving access to birth
control is not one of Concerned Women for America's concerns.
Let's remember that Bush political appointees interfered at the
FDA and succeeded in blocking women's over-the-counter access to
Plan B for more than three years. These groups will do anything
to oppose birth control.

UGLY: MISSISSIPPI GOVERNOR SIGNS ABORTION BAN
Gov. Haley Barbour (R) recently signed a statewide abortion ban
into law. This law would criminalize abortion in Mississippi in
nearly all circumstances if the Supreme Court overturns the
landmark Roe v. Wade decision. Barbour is just one more example
of a hypocritical anti-choice politician who continues to attack
safe, legal abortion, while refusing to support commonsense
policies, such as better access to birth control, to help
prevent unintended pregnancies in the first place.

HERO AND ZERO OF THE MONTH

HERO OF THE MONTH: NARAL PRO-CHOICE WYOMING
Pro-choice Wyoming citizens fought off anti-choice legislative
attacks for nearly two decades, but they recently came just a
pen stroke away from having an anti-choice law enacted. Last
month, Gov. Freudenthal (D) vetoed a bill that would have
created separate legal status for embryos and fetuses, a
longtime strategy used by our opponents to challenge Roe v.
Wade. NARAL Pro-Choice Wyoming played a central role in the
governor's decision to strike down the bill. For its leadership,
NARAL Pro-Choice Wyoming earns our Hero of the Month award!

ZERO OF THE MONTH: MITT ROMNEY
When he ran for governor of Massachusetts in 2002, Republican
presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he would "preserve and
protect" a woman's right to choose. Now, while attempting to woo
anti-choice support for his run for the White House, he's
reversed his position and now calls himself "firmly pro-life."
In the words of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, whom Romney tried to
unseat in 1994, "I am pro-choice. My opponent is
multiple-choice." For his flip-flopping statements, Mitt Romney
earns our Zero of the Month award.

SENATE APPROVES FEDERAL BUDGET OUTLINE, BOOSTING CHANCES FOR
HEALTH-CARE AND FAMILY-PLANNING FUNDING!
In just over 24 hours, NARAL Pro-Choice America supporters sent
more than 11,000 messages to their senators, asking them to give
important health programs - such as family planning - a big
boost in funding. For the last six years, under anti-choice
leadership, Congress routinely starved funding for
family-planning programs. Thank you for helping reverse this
trend and ensuring that these programs move one step closer to
getting the funding they need!
