Fresno City Council Resolution Against Immigration Raids

by irlandeso
Recently the Fresno City Council was going to actually vote down a resolution condemning the immigration raids in Mendota this last February, though luckily the 4th no vote was off teaching a class at Fresno City College and didn't get the chance to cast his vote. All 3 council members who were in attendence that voted against condemning the Mendota ICE raids were white males. The Fresno City Council members that voted to condemn the recent raids were Cynthia Sterling, Henry Perea Jr., and Blong Xiong.

In light of the above mentioned balked vote, I decided to begin to look at stances that the Fresno City Council took in the past in relation to immigration raids, below is an example from 1985.

The resolution was passed as a result of immigration operations in Parlier and Sanger that
virtually shut down those towns. Local police and sheriff's deputies were used to
rope off whole areas, in Parlier they surrounded the entire town; while
INS went in and arrested hundreds of people.

Resolutions were passed by the Fresno City Council, City Councils of Sanger and Parlier, and the Fresno County Board of Supervisors.

note: it was a unanimous stance against the raids.

More has already been posted to the Undercurrent website and the story will be running, along with a story about recent immigration raids in Madera and organizing efforts around them, in the May edition of the Fresno Undercurrent.

We will also be looking into more of the history surrounding immigration raids in the Central Valley, responses to them; and their relation to the immigrant rights movement, anti-immigrant scapegoating, and immigration policies on a local and national level.
