Taliban demand French withdrawal

by Al Jazeera (reposted)
Taliban fighters who say they abducted two French aid workers and three Afghans earlier this month have demanded all French troops withdraw from Afghanistan in one week.
Earlier in the week, the French nationals had appealed to their government to comply with the demand saying that they feared they would be killed soon.

In a statement posted on a website, the group also said they wanted immediate talks with the Afghan government to negotiate the release of Taliban prisoners.

"In case of refusal action will be taken against them [the hostages] promptly," the statement said.

The two French nationals were working for the non-governmental organisation Terre d'Enfance (A World for Our Children), when they went missing on April 3 in Nimroz province.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) last week acquired a video which showed the two aid workers, along with their translators and driver, being held by armed men.

Also on Friday, two Nato soldiers were killed in separate blasts in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said.

The defence ministry in Amsterdam said on Friday that one of the dead was a Dutch soldier who died after stepping on a land mine in Helmand province.
