SF's Hippy Hill hosts Four Twenty

by nancy netnik
Happy 4-20!
"Happy 4-20!" proclaims a colored chalk message
on a paved path in Golden Gate Park, 20 April 2007, at the Hippie Hill drum cicle. Another simply shouts "Rasta!". A shooting star sports a rainbow tail; while a red-capped mushroom (Amanita?) displays white spots. "I love people" offers hope.

"Four Twenty" celebrants have been gathering on the lawn all afternoon, on this sunny Friday. At the symbolic moment of 4:20 pm, hundreds share Shiva's holy sacrament.

[ The mood now is far more cheerful than yesterday, on 4-19 outside SF City Hall, where feminists reacted to an attack by a majority of U.S. Supreme Court justices. One, sotto voce, likened their decision to "a combat boot slamming my cunt". ]

Today a costumed woman gestures with a broom while dancing to the drums. (Does her broom symbolize Wicca?) Another hula-hoops while she dances.

When your reporter leaves, around five,
more people are still arriving.

So mark your calendar now for 4-20-2008 at SF's Hippie Hill, on a Sunday in Passover season.
