UN workers killed in Afghan blast

by Al Jazeera (reposted)
Five United Nations staff have been killed when their convoy was attacked in southern Afghanistan.
Police in Kandahar province said that four Nepali UN employees and their Afghan translator died when a bomb exploded near their armoured vehicle on Tuesday morning.

Early reports said that the men were security guards and that their vehicle had been almost completely destroyed by the powerful explosion from a remote-controlled bomb.

A United Nations spokesman said a vehicle from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) had been attacked while travelling to the UN's base in Kandahar city.

"The blast has claimed the lives of an Afghan driver and four Nepalese contractors working with the UN office for project services," the UN said in a statement released from the capital Kabul.

Kandahar is the birthplace of the Taliban, the main movement that is opposed to the UN-backed government in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.

Five people have been killed after a roadside bomb blew up a United Nations vehicle in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, police say.

Four of the dead are reported to be Nepalese UN workers, the fifth an Afghan driver.

Kandahar has seen an increasing number of attacks by the Taleban. No group has so far said it carried out the bombing.

UN officials confirmed there had been a bombing involving a UN vehicle as it was returning to base in Kandahar.

Police cordoned off the site of the blast, where reporters described a scene of carnage.
