Friends,
Here is a brief update of our ongoing work.
Nationally, Education Not Incarceration is building to the
National Education Association's 10,000 delegate Representative
Assembly where we will launch our 4 Point Plan to Empower Students and
Prevent Them From Being Pushed Out of School.
Locally, in Oakland we are running several exciting programs, including
building a coalition calling for a moratorium on school
closures and to return Oakland to local control.
All we are asking is for you to get involved!
Thanks,
Sincerely,
Jonathan Stribling-Uss

6. Join ENI as we travel to Sacramento to support Assemblyman
Swansen’s
bill to provide more education resources to incarcerated youth.
Wednesday, April 25, meet at 11AM at the ENI office, 3280 Morcom Ave.
(Sacramento) — On Wednesday, April 11th, Assemblymember Sandré R.
Swanson’s (D-Oakland) first major bill, “The Youth Probation and
Success Act,” passed the Assembly Education Committee with unanimous,
bipartisan support. AB 407 aims to curb the high rate of return among
youth in juvenile detention centers by instituting pre-release training
and education programs.
When passed, AB 407 will launch a three year pilot program to
demonstrate that investing in high risk, detained youth with
vocational training, education, and transition services causes a
reduction in the number of returning offenders. This legislation
authorizes $4.5 million to serve 400 youth at selected sites. Grant
funds will be augmented by participation with business and private
sector partners.
AB 407 will prepare incarcerated youth for meaningful employment
through certificated training and/or vocational education programs.
In addition to vocational training, job preparation training will be
combined with an academic program fortified with literacy support to
improve vocational and academic outcomes. Both the Legislative
Analyst’s Office and the Little Hoover Commission have recommended
similar programs to address the worsening prison crisis.
