Afghan blasts claim 13 lives

by reposted
Thirteen people including seven policemen were killed in Afghanistan yesterday in a series of explosions, one targeting a police headquarters, officials said.
A suicide bomber blew himself up at the gate of the police station in eastern Khost province, killing the seven police and one civilian, the government said.

"A suicide bomber exploded at the gate of the border police headquarters. Four police officers, three policemen and a civilian were martyred," said an interior ministry statement.

It was originally thought all eight victims in the attack, which wounded 10 others, were policemen.

The attack in Khost, which borders Pakistan, is the latest in a wave of Iraq-style suicide bombings which have rocked Afghanistan in recent months.

A police official, who witnessed the incident, said he saw the suicide bomber arriving at the gate and then there was an explosion.

A suicide bomber has blown himself up at the gate of a police headquarters in eastern Afghanistan, killing at least eight policemen and some civilians, police and medics said.

The attack in Khost, which borders Pakistan, is the latest in a wave of Iraq-style suicide bombings which have rocked Afghanistan in recent months.

"There was a suicide bombing at the main gate of the border police headquarters. More than 12 people including policemen and civilians were killed and injured," police commander Qasem Khil said.

He said the casualties included several civilians.

"We have got so far eight policemen dead, whose bodies were brought to our hospital," doctor Gul Mohammaddin Mohammadi from the Khost city hospital said.

He said six other officers were also brought with injuries.

A purported Taliban spokesman, Yousuf Ahmadi, calling AFP from an unknown location, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the bomber was an Afghani.

“We carried out the attack. It was carried out by a devoted mujahid (holy warrior),” Ahmadi said.

Militants from the Taliban regime toppled by a US-led invasion in 2001 have pledged to launch a wave of suicide bombings this year as the rebels have stepped up their campaign against the US-backed government of President Hamid Karzai.
