Professional employees of large High-tech and Biotech companies like GENENTECH, ROCHE, GILEAD, SRI AND ELECTRONIC ARTS enjoy excellent wages, benefits and amenities, like free gym memberships and subsidized meals.
These same companies contract for their food service to a company that hires workers to prepare and serve those meals. In contrast to the Bio-tech/High-Tech employees, these cafeteria workers are forced to survive on low wages and poor benefits. Genentech workers, for example, are employed at one of the best places to work in the US, while employees in the cafeterias complain of inhumane workloads and lack of dignity on the job.
We would like to invite you to a community forum focusing on the two
(uneven) economies between High-tech professional employees and
Guckenheimer-empoyed Food Service Workers in San Mateo and the
Silicon Valley.
It is important for these contracted workers to have your support.
Right now, the pressure is on for Guckenheimer clients such as
Genentech to adopt a code of conduct. The time is now that they hire
labor-responsible food contractors and end the injustice of low-
wages, unaffordable healthcare and disrespect at work!
This event will feature testimonies from subcontracted workers,
support from Congressman Tom Lantos, Hon. Jerry Hill, Senator Leland
Yee and other elected and community leaders.
