The morning of April 7, 2003 in the Port of Oakland

by --from the archives
What happened at the Oakland docks on April 7, 2003? Here is a collection of links to reports on the police attack and the events that followed.

FIFTY NINE PERSONS were injured on April 7, 2003 when police attacked peaceful protesters, longshoremen, legal observers and newspersons in the Port of Oakland. Five weeks later, several hundred protesters returned to the Port for a successful demonstration in defense of our endangered First Amendment right to picket at the docks. This right was reaffirmed the following year with another demonstration in the Port on the anniversary of the attack.

"THERE'S NOTHING like making the list of the world's worst government violence against activists. The Oakland Police Department earned that distinction for its assault on peaceful anti-war demonstrators at the port …"
--from the Oakland Tribune, 4/6/2004, after the U.N. Commission on Human Rights report came out.

JUST A MONTH after the April 7 Oakland police debacle that left dozens of peaceful protesters with welts the size of golf balls, hundreds of antiwar activists and concerned residents returned to the Port of Oakland May 12 to stand up to police brutality and to affirm the constitutionally protected rights of free speech and assembly.

PORT of PARANOIA
Paranoid Port officials pondered their worst-case-scenario nightmares and wound up equating demonstrations to nuclear explosions. They shared their finest thoughts on Port security with a reporter from the Oakland Tribune (6/29/2003). Truly a bizarre story.

On the subject of denying people their civil rights, people should NEVER forget that the Oakland Police tried to KILL two innocent activists, Judy Bari and Darryl Cherney in 1993. The two were scarred for life --- Bari was severely disabled from the car bomb that was placed in her car by the FBI/Oakland Police and Darryl was irreversably scarred emotionally. Bari died about six years later from cancer and no doubt the severe physical and emotional pain she endured contributed to it's development.

If you don't know the story, search for it on Indybay, or search on the Internet. There is an excellent website that details what happened. Yes, our government tries to kill innocent people.

¡Viva Judy Bari!
